Yes, a synthetic duvet can be washed at home: delicate cycle, water at 40 °C maximum, gentle spin, followed by complete drying at low heat with two or three dryer balls. What ruins it is almost never the washing itself. It's a washer that is too small, fabric softener, or a duvet put away while the center is still damp.
Is my washer large enough?
This is the first and most important question. A duvet must have room to move in the water. Crammed into a drum that is too small, it comes out clean on the edges and dirty in the center, and the washer puts strain on its bearings.
French retailer Electro Dépôt recommends only filling the drum three-quarters full. In Canada, washer capacity is measured in cubic feet rather than kilos:
| Duvet Size | Capacity in kilos (Europe) | Washer in Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 5 to 7 kg | Standard washer |
| Double | 7 to 9 kg | Large capacity recommended |
| Queen | 10 to 12 kg | Large capacity, approx. 4.5 ft³ or more |
| King | 12 kg or more | Extra-large capacity or laundromat washer |
A simple rule of thumb: if you have to push to close the door, it's too small. A self-service laundromat washer costs a few dollars and saves a $150 duvet.
Also avoid top-loading washers with a central agitator: the post twists the duvet and can tear the casing. Impeller models, which lack a post, are suitable.
The right program, step by step
- Read the label. It has the final say on temperature and drying.
- Check the seams before washing. A small hole will enlarge during washing, and the filling will leak out.
- Delicate or duvet cycle, warm water, 40 °C maximum for a synthetic, as recommended by the brand Wespring.
- Use little liquid detergent. Powder does not dissolve well in thick filling and leaves residue.
- An extra rinse. This is what removes soap left in the heart of the duvet.
- Spin at 1000 RPM maximum. Any faster and the fibers will compress.
What ruins a duvet
| The mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
| Water too hot | Synthetic fibers deform and lose their loft for good |
| Fabric softener | It coats the fibers. They breathe less and hold moisture instead of wicking it away |
| Overfilled drum | Uneven washing, poorly rinsed soap, strain on washer bearings |
| Incomplete drying | Moisture remains at the core, musty odor appears within days |
| High-heat drying | The casing can scorch and the fibers can melt in places |
Fabric softener is worth emphasizing. We use it to make the duvet soft. Mostly, it makes the duvet less capable of doing what we ask of it at night: letting moisture escape. If you wake up clammy under a duvet that has been washed with softener for years, there is a link.
How to dry a duvet without clumping it
Drying takes longer than washing. Count on two to three hours in the dryer for a queen.
- Low heat, always.
- Two or three dryer balls, or clean tennis balls in a sock. They break up clumps and restore fiber loft.
- Take it out every 30 minutes and shake it. Clumps form in the corners.
- The final test: press the center of the duvet between your hands. If you feel any coolness, it is not dry. Add 30 minutes.
Without a dryer, lay it flat on two racks, flip it several times, and count on one to two days. Never put it back on the bed until the center is dry.
How often should you wash your duvet?
Once or twice a year is enough for the duvet itself. The duvet cover is what gets washed often, like sheets: every one to two weeks. A well-maintained cover is what allows you to wash the duvet rarely.
The right time in Quebec: in the spring, before storing it for the summer, and in the autumn, when you take it back out. A duvet stored dirty for six months retains its odors. And if you are still hesitant about what weight to bring out for winter, our weight guide provides the full table.
At NUVIA
The Meringue Duvet was designed to be washed in a home machine: dual-layer filling so the loft returns after washing, and square-stitched quilting so the fibers do not migrate into a corner. No dry cleaning required. Free delivery in Quebec.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wash a duvet in an ordinary washer?
A twin duvet, yes. For a queen or king, you need a large-capacity washer, around 4.5 ft³ or more, or a laundromat washer. The duvet must be able to move in the water.
At what temperature should you wash a synthetic duvet?
40 °C maximum, on a delicate cycle. Hotter water can deform the fiber and cause it to permanently lose its loft. The label always has the final say.
Should you use fabric softener?
No. Fabric softener coats the fiber, which reduces its ability to let moisture pass through. An extra rinse results in a cleaner duvet without this effect.
How do you know if a duvet is fully dry?
Press the center between your hands. The slightest sensation of coolness means the core is still damp. A duvet stored while damp will develop a musty odor within days.
How often should you wash a duvet?
Once or twice a year. The duvet cover, however, should be washed every one to two weeks, just like sheets.
Why is my duvet clumpy after washing?
It was not shaken enough during drying. Put it back in the dryer on low heat with two or three dryer balls, and shake it every 30 minutes.
